The Lost Art of Collaboration

Do people really hate to talk to each other?  Is collaboration dead?  Of course we have the online, mashed, and mixed up versions of collaborative tools which are great to have and hard to live without.  But, what happened to the face-to-face collaboration that existed before the computerized craze?  A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, people actually talked to each other instead of texting, emailing, and instant messaging.  Sometimes these technologies are necessary for communication, such as when employees and company assets are hundreds of miles away from each other.  Whatever happened to forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning?  These are the major communication and collaboration methods for building teams.  Each team will go through these phases before a completed product is ready to be released.  One of the major stages of team building, storming, is where conflict between members occurs.  Usually, there  are competing objectives involved.  Each member will fight for their piece of the project, organization, etc.  A little healthy conflict now and then is okay.

Is this what is missing or what people are afraid of?  No one seems to want to discuss problems unless it is through Facebook, Twitter, or e-mail.  So, here is a challenge for all of you.  Instead of insisting on a video teleconference, or phone call, tell to them to meet in a conference room or at your desk.  A lot of good information can be gained from a simple conversation. Also, most people will appreciate the personal touch.
